Hence the term ‘swan song’. Hence also the name “Whooper Swan” for the other swan species we have in Sweden. In Finland, it was believed that with its long neck, the swan could communicate with both humans and birds. The neck allowed it to reach both worlds. It was also a human that had been transformed into a bird and was therefore considered sacred. It belonged to the upper world where the birds and the gods lived and when it moved for the winter it went to the upper world of the Milky Way. One may wonder if the three Finnish brothers Magnus William Ferdinand von Wright thought about it when they made their amazing illustrations of birds. The illustration on the card is one of them.
